Wedding Day Traditions & Superstitions

Typically, all brides become aware of the many superstitions that accompany their wedding day. The vast array of superstitions sometimes coordinates with a cultural tradition or even ancient folklore. Nonetheless, all of them have the same intention which is to ward off evil spirits and bad luck.

Breaking Glass

Once such example is the breaking of glass. In a Jewish wedding, it is a way to remember the destruction of the Jewish temple in Jerusalem and symbolize the finality of the marital covenant. Italians break a glass or a vase and count the pieces which dictate how many years the couple will be happily married. Whereas in Greece, the custom of breaking plates during the reception illustrates good luck, happiness, and the permanence of marriage.

Cuts Like A Knife

One folklore superstition says to never give a bride and groom a set of knives because they signify a broken relationship. Therefore, it may be a good idea to not put a fancy set on the bridal registry.

Rain, Rain Don’t Go Away

Although many brides and wedding planners want a picture-perfect wedding day, some cultures believe that rain on a wedding day is good luck because it symbolizes fertility and cleansing.

 Jump

For some, it is a time-honored tradition for the bride and groom to jump over a broom during the ceremony. The act illustrates a new beginning and a sweeping away of the past. It can also signify the joining of two families.

 Something Old, Something New

But… the age-old English rhyme which dates way back to the 1300s is probably a favorite amongst all of them. This tradition is still followed in practically every wedding regardless of nationality or religion.

Something old, something new,
Something borrowed, something blue,
(And a silver sixpence in her shoe)

These items carry the symbolic meaning for continuity, optimism, happiness, prosperity, purity, love, fidelity, and luck in a marriage. Brides usually find it entertaining as the bridal party and family go on the hunt to provide such items. These may include a family heirloom, a garter, a fabric swatch, a piece of jewelry, a locket, and/or a bible.

However, modern day brides are getting a bit more creative especially with “something blue”. From sapphire cocktail rings, tanzanite earrings, designer shoes, delicate monogram stitching on handkerchiefs, lacy lingerie, the bridal bouquet, the manicure, and even the dress to some of the details and decor, the signature hue is big, blue, and bolder than ever.

Hooray for Chuppahs

As much as brides love creating the look for their reception, the ceremony merits the same attention, if not more, since it is the first part of the wedding and the reason for the big day. In fact, it is the first look for the guests and a taste of what they can expect to come much like the wedding invitation.

Of course, how much décor and the type of décor needed all depends on the location. Many houses of worship have intricate details and do not need much adornment, while other venues need the ceremonial area more defined, therefore needing more décor.

Walk This Way

Regardless if the ceremony takes places in a synagogue, church, cathedral, hotel, garden, or beachside, the décor includes dressing the aisle all the way up to the actual nuptial area. From the entry to the runner and the pews, these can all be decorated to set the mood.

Flowers create a romantic atmosphere and should be designed to scale with the allocated space. A reputable florist will make the appropriate recommendations. Examples may be utilizing draping or creating an additional arch if the doorway you enter is not pleasing to the eye since this is a main focal point and the first entrance photo. If your florist is familiar with the venue, they will also know if there are any restrictions such as using real flames for candles or LED ones.

Mazel Tov

The chuppah itself is a tradition in Jewish ceremonies as it symbolizes the couple’s first home. It has four posts and is open on all sides which represents hospitality to one’s guests. More and more couples despite their religious beliefs are requesting something similar. Floral arches, gazebos, arbors, and columns have increasingly become more popular as well.

There is no doubt that the chuppah is the most romantic backdrop for every ceremony. However, just because it is a tradition does not mean it has to be traditional.

One Love

For over 100 years we have been celebrating life’s milestone moments. Throughout the century much has happened in the world including same-sex marriages. Sixteen years ago, Massachusetts was the first state to make it legal. And finally, just five years ago, on June 26, 2015, the U.S. Supreme Court legalized it in all fifty states.

“No union is more profound than marriage, for it embodies the highest ideals of love, fidelity, devotion, sacrifice, and family. In forming a marital union, two people become something greater than once they were. As some of the petitioners in these cases demonstrate, marriage embodies a love that may endure even past death. It would misunderstand these men and women to say they disrespect the idea of marriage. Their plea is that they do respect it, respect it so deeply that they seek to find its fulfillment for themselves. Their hope is not to be condemned to live in loneliness, excluded from one of civilization’s oldest institutions. They ask for equal dignity in the eyes of the law. The Constitution grants them that right.”

Justice Anthony Kennedy

Love is Love

Of course, not everyone agrees with this type of union, but we certainly do! Love is love, and we support and embrace all kinds. We take pride in producing the most spectacular weddings for same-sex marriages. A matter of fact, we have done many and plan on designing many more.

Pride

The month of June was designated “Gay and Lesbian Pride Month” by President Bill Clinton. This commemorated the 1969 Stonewall riots which lobbied equal rights for all and marked the beginning of a movement to outlaw discriminatory laws and practices against gay Americans. Later, President Barack Obama expanded the celebration further by declaring June “Gay Pride or LGBT+Q (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender + Questioning) Month”. Most recently, we also could not be more pleased with the announcement about civil law protection against discrimination in the workplace for these individuals.

I Do! You Do! We Do!

We like to celebrate every day and believe that everyone should have the opportunity to showcase their devotion to each other in any manner and in any month that they choose. Our excellent reputation has preceded us for over ten decades and we will continue to provide exceptional service, outstanding value, and magnificent design regardless of race, color, religion, ethnicity, or sexual orientation.

The Power of the Flower

Once a wedding date is set and a venue is selected, one of the next steps is to find a reputable florist to create your magical day. Flowers are a much-needed element at any event, but especially at a wedding. Mother Nature’s beauties can create a romantic, elegant, or dramatic effect in any space which ties an entire look and vision together.

Typically, floral décor can account for at least 10% -15% (and sometimes more depending on a client’s wants) of a budget, but they are a crucial component to designing just the perfect setting. So, it is important to find a highly recommended and trusted florist. An experienced and seasoned professional will guide you in the right direction and take your budget into account to produce a design that makes the most sense.

Unless you have a wedding planner who can direct you, choosing the right florist, much like finding other vendors, is best by word-of-mouth or a great online referral source with many reviews.

Know the Difference

Full-Service Florist – Do not be deceived by the name. A full-service florist is typically a retail shop that can provide bouquets, boutonnieres, some ceremonial arrangements, and perhaps some centerpieces. These types are perfect if you want to create your own designs, order arrangements for special occasions such as holidays and birthdays or send get well wishes.

Floral Designer – This kind of florist offers a wider range of services and may or may not have a retail shop. They have a larger space for constructing custom items such as arches and chuppahs. They may also create multiple centerpieces and have a larger supply of vases, candelabras, and other vessels.

Floral and Event Decorator – This type of florist has the capability and staff to assist in the overall concept and design of a wedding or any other event. Besides having access to an abundance of flowers, they offer lighting, draping, furnishings, and other props needed while being able to design and construct custom pieces. They are known for transforming an entire space and traditionally having more buying power, therefore giving their clients the most value.

Be Prepared

Before you schedule a visit, first be sure they have your date available. Know the size of your wedding party and guest count. Gather photos of flowers, color swatches, and other décor items and ideas you like. A great resource are bridal magazines and Pinterest. Be ready to present your vision and convey your sense of style.

Review Their Portfolio

A company with a long-time history will have thousands of photos to showcase their work. This will enable clients to see the endless options available. It is also a great time to get new ideas you may have not thought of. Be sure to point out items you like as well as items you do not like. This will only help your designer get to know you and create exactly what you want.

Tour Their Facility

A reputable company will be proud to show you their floral coolers, production area, and warehouse. Their refrigeration capacity should be large enough to keep your florals looking their best while their talented team of designers are busy at work creating magnificent arrangements. An inventory of items offered should be visible and a fleet of dedicated lettered vehicles should be on-site to make you feel confident that they can deliver everything they promise.

Ask Questions

As with any vendor you visit, it is important that you feel comfortable and have a rapport since this will be a valuable relationship you will be developing during the planning process. Get answers to such questions as…

Have they worked at your venue before?

This is helpful because if they have, they would have most likely developed a good-standing relationship and be familiar with all the ins and outs. They will also know what is permitted and what is not. They may also have photos in their portfolio to share which will help you see how the space looks with décor. If they have not worked at the venue, they should schedule a visit to familiarize themselves with the space and the staff.

What flowers are “in season” for your celebration?

Procuring fresh products when flowers are “out of season” will often lead to the client paying more money for a lesser quality item. Your florist should tell you what will be “in season” during your date to help you save money and get the most “bang for your buck”.

Your designer should welcome all your questions and be flexible to accept change and listen to your opinion. However, it is best to be open and establish a concept together. If you do not like something, it is okay to let them know. They want your day to be everything you envisioned and more, so do not be afraid to speak up.

See a Sample

Many florists will create a sample centerpiece prior to your event to give you a “sneak-peek” of what your florals will look like the day of your affair. It is a great visual opportunity to be able to make changes and/or any alternative decisions.

Dollars and Sense

A highly demanded florist will need a signed contract and a deposit to secure the date on their calendar. Policies vary from florist to florist, so find out when all monies are due as well as other items such as cancellation, changes, setup, breakdown, and delivery fees.

The Perfect “Sole”mate

Typically, all brides hit the ground running as soon as they get engaged. They throw themselves into the bridal cyclone and begin searching online platforms and bridal publications for all kinds of ideas. They want the perfect dress, the perfect cake, the perfect flowers, and the perfect day just as they always imagined.

One of these significant details they also want are the shoes. Besides shopping for an amazing venue and team of fabulous vendors, one tiny detail almost every bride fixates on are the shoes. Yes, the shoes! Practically every bride we encounter wants (needs) the perfect pair.

Whether they be 4-inch stilettos, cowboy boots, flip flops, or fun high-tops to dance the night away, these kicks show a bride’s style and personality. Perhaps, it is because she found her soul mate who swept her off her feet? Maybe, it is because of the fairy tale? Maybe, she is just obsessed with shoes?

Whatever the answer may be, designers are aware and continuously create a variety of options. Each year’s bridal shoe collections are filled with luxurious textures, patterns, bling, and even unique colors. From the traditional to the outrageous, brides spend countless hours searching for this “sole”mate to take them down the aisle.

These beauties never get overlooked either. They get quality time in front of the camera just the same as the one wearing them.

If the shoe fits, buy it!

… And They Call it “Puppy Love”

Anyone planning a wedding knows that many details are entailed, but the 2020 emerging trend actually includes plenty of “deets” and lots of “tails”. More and more brides and grooms are choosing to have their beloved four-legged friends as part of their special day. However, there are a few items needing consideration to ensure a “paws-itively” perfect celebration.

Smooches and Pooches

First things first, before you walk down the aisle to say, “I Do”, it is imperative to check with your venue to be sure animals (other than service animals) are allowed on-site. Many venues are comfortable having pets these days but, be prepared as some may charge a small fee.

Heads or Tails

As you are making your guest list and creating your bridal party, decide if having your pet is a smart choice. Inquire if anyone has allergies or fears. Although it is your big day, it is always nice to think about the comfort of your guests. Some couples note on their invitation that a “special appearance” by their “four-legged child” will be made during the ceremony. This will alert those ahead of time to prevent any issues. Also, having a designated person to take care of the pet is a great idea.

Bark or Bite

As much as you would love to have your furry friend by your side, keep in mind their personality and temperament. Are they friendly and loving? Are they aggressive, nervous, or noisy? Will they behave in an unfamiliar environment with a large crowd?  Animals have keen senses and may get overwhelmed by loud noises such as the band’s soundcheck. Only you know your pup’s disposition best, so keep these factors in mind.

Bad to the Bone

The bride is not the only one needing a little bling. Décor companies can always assist with florals for the collar and leash to add a pop of color and coordinate with the bridal party. Be sure to discuss this with your florist during your consultation.

Pawprints

If you decide it is not a good idea to have your canine walk down the aisle, consider just taking photographs prior to the big event. This is a win-win for everyone and will make an adorable keepsake.

No bones about it, by following the guidelines mentioned above a memorable day will be had by all.

Pets are part of the family and should be included only if it makes sense.

Celebrate Life!

Everyone knows that the COVID-19 pandemic has made the world come to a screeching halt. Life as we knew it changed overnight. Celebrations such as proms and graduations were canceled, weddings and bar/bat mitzvahs postponed, and vacations and promotions delayed. The disappointment and sadness of such losses has everyone wondering when and if we can celebrate again?

We have currently assisted over 100 clients by rescheduling their events and are happy to advise anyone concerned about the current situation with the information we have available. We are not doctors or scientists, but we are designers looking at ways to be more creative to make events safer for everyone. Of course, we will follow the guidelines recommended by the Center for Disease Control (CDC).

Although we may not be able to have parties for large crowds at this time, we can assure our clients that we can accommodate and adjust the scale of décor. From intimate backyard weddings to small gatherings in places of worship or unique venues, we will still overdeliver and create a most memorable event regardless of size.

Because of smaller guest counts, design elements not previously obtainable in the initial budget may now be accessible. Clients, especially our brides, can really achieve their dream wedding with all their desires. This may include a multitude of florals, a wrapped dance floor with a monogram, more lighting, accent walls, ceiling décor, and furnishings. Any additional decor components have the potential to enhance the space and create just the perfect ambiance.

For example, we can make seating chart boards instead of traditional place card tables. This allows a hands-free option for seating assignments. Smaller tables can be created for families not friendships to abide by social distancing rules. Therefore, linens, place settings, and glassware can now be another focal point which we can help highlight along with larger multi-dimensional centerpieces. As always, we will continue to offer flexibility in floral choice and share what blooms are local and what are in season which will be the most cost-effective.

The unknown is most frightening and all of us at Dalsimer Atlas Floral and Event Decorators are always here to celebrate and decorate, but we are also here to guide our clients during this uncertain time just the same. At the end of the day, we want to continue providing an ultimate client experience with exceptional service, outstanding value, and magnificent design while reassuring you and your families that safety is also of the utmost concern. For 100 years we have been celebrating life’s milestone moments and we do not plan on stopping now.

Figure Skating Bat Mitzvah | Congregation B’nai Israel | Boca Raton

Marissa’s love for figure skating was incorporated in her awesome Bat Mitzvah celebration. Icy cool elements and charming floral creations were incorporated throughout the decor. Our designers used pastel tones of blue, purple, lavender, and pink with shimmering accents to create a charming atmosphere in the ballroom at Congregation B’nai Israel in Boca Raton. The centerpieces consisted of opulent floral arrangements on top of tall stands cloaked with crystal curtains. The flower selection included hydrangeas, roses, and Bells of Ireland. A dedicated area for Marissa and her friends was framed by a facade that featured beautiful figure-skating photos of Marissa. A large custom-made logo for the event personalized the dance floor. Everything about Marissa’s ice skating themed Bat Mitzvah party was adorable!

Marriott Harbor Beach Resort Wedding | Lauren + Todd

A truly romantic setting was created for Lauren and Todd’s lovely wedding at the Fort Lauderdale Marriott Harbor Beach. The couple selected white, ivory, and lavender as their wedding colors. Lauren and Todd were married beneath a beautiful chuppah overlooking the sea. The colors and arrangement of the flowers blended perfectly with the background. A unique look was created in the reception by using a combination of 3 centerpieces designed with lisianthus, hydrangeas, hybrid delphinium, and orchids. Half of the guest tables received market clusters of the chosen flowers in stunning arrangements. The royal tables were appointed with long and lush floral displays. The remaining set of centerpiece designs were composed of oversized umbrella cascades showing a beautiful blend of purple and white hues. A collection of candles added a warm glow throughout the ballroom. This was a wonderful event to celebrate the love between the newlyweds, Lauren and Todd.

Kristina and Matthew’s dreamy wedding was held at the marvelous Renaissance Boca Raton Hotel. The couple chose soft color tones of white, ivory, lavender, and purple. Kristina looked charming with a classic bridal bouquet of roses, baby orchids, and mini calla lilies. The bridal party walked along an aisle of alternating floral designs and candles set on silver wrought iron holders. This was further enhanced with a gorgeous backdrop of white fabric bathed in soft lavender LED lighting. At the reception, an impressive floral arrangement was used for the place card table.
